Shamwari
is the Southern most, Big Game, private reserve in Africa - MALARIA
FREE. This ultimate African adventure stretches along the Bushman's
river, halfway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, and forms a natural
extension to the famous Garden Route and Cape Town. The 14000
hectare game reserve is steeped in Settler history, and dates back to
the time when game roamed freely in the Eastern Cape. Shamwari is about
conserving a vanishing way of life, and has been awarded a number of
International awards for its efforts in conservation coupled with tourism.
Shamwari is an African dream. A game reserve in which a multitude of
plant, animal and birdlife unfold the very soul of an untamed continent,
along with the most luxurious means of experiencing your safari holiday.
Shamwari's highly trained game rangers, with skilled service staff will
ensure a memorable adventure, personalised to your needs. In keeping
with its conservation policy Shamwari has a complete wildlife research
team as well as its own anti poaching unit, ensuring an ecological balance
prevails on this reclaimed piece of wilderness.


A Colonial African Experience
Long Lee Manor,
an Edwardian Mansion, built in 1910 has been restored to its former
glory and is the flagship of the reserve. This magnificent reminder
of an era of gracious living, offers guests the finest in accommodation,
service and cuisine.
Long Lee accommodates 34
guests in deluxe period en-suite double rooms. All rooms have air-conditioning
or ceiling fans and underfloor heating. Four types of accommodation
are on offer. The Manor House, Palm Court, Sidbury Suites and the Garden
Suite.
Expertly prepared meals
can be enjoyed in the main dining room, under the stats in the courtyard,
or at the riverside "lapa" overlooking the hippo pool. Long
Lee Manor offers sweeping views of the valley towards the Bushman's
river.


Shamwari Lodge
is a true "Five Star" African experience with its rustic thatched
roofs and ethnic decor. Nestled among the varied flora of the valley
bushveld vegetation, you will enjoy a relaxed tranquillity accompanied
only by avian melodies. The presidential suite, complete with private
lounge and fireplace, as well as five deluxe double en-suite bedrooms,
all with separate shower, bath, underfloor heating, ceiling fans and
air-conditioning. Shamwari Lodge sleeps a maximum of 12 guests and prides
itself on personalised, 24 hour service.
Traditional African cooking
with a European flavour can be enjoyed in either the diningroom, or
around the fireside "lapa," The poolbar and swimming pool
provide an attractive and relaxing venue to discuss the day's activities.
Savour an evening cocktail after your game drive at the poolbar or in
the cool granite floored lounge.


Carn Ingly and
Highfield are two 1860 Settler cottages, unoccupied for the
last 60 years. Both cottages are furnished with period pieces and unob
trusive modern conveniences.
These original Settler
homes are situated in the heart of the reserve and it is not
uncommon to find Rhino and other wildlife roaming on your doorstep.
Each cottage is fully serviced with it's own game ranger, chef and service
staff, to care for you personally.
Gourmet barbecue style
meals are served in either the dining room or outside on the verandah.
Cam Ingly sleeps six guests in three double rooms with bathrooms en-suite.
Highfield can accommodate eight guests in four double rooms, with inter
leading bathrooms. These cottages can be occupied by either a group,
families, or individual guests.
Both cottages have swimming pools.


Game drives are taken in
the morning and evening with highly experienced rangers, who share their
knowledge with you and bring you close to Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo,
Lion, Giraffe, Hippo and more than eighteen antelope species. Game drives
are in open landrovers for you to fully appreciate the plains, grasslands,
valleys, thicket, vast species of birds and animals that Shamwari has
to offer. Various research and current conservation projects will be
explained to you, as well as the fascinating Settler history this area
has to offer.
The ideal stay at Shamwari
is two days. Transfers are provided from Port Elizabeth airport, a mere
fifty minute drive in a chauffeur driven vehicle. During your stay at
Shamwari you will have an opportunity to visit Kaya Lendaba, a traditional
African healing village. This ethnic home of story telling, gives visitors
the opportunity to understand how cultures lived in an integrated world,
and the spiritual significance of sacred rituals and places, practiced
for centuries by African people.
