Henna Pre-School Huntington Community Mission: The Objective of Henna Pre-School is to provide schooling and education for children under the age of six who live within the Huntington Community. History of Henna Pre-School: Henna Pre-school fist started during 1991 and was named after one of the “Indunas” of Chiefs in Huntington. The Pre-school was stared form a donation from the Roman Catholic Church and approximately 20 children attended the school in the early years. The school initially used mud-walled buildings for infrastructure and since the turn of the Century, better facilities have been built and since Lion Sands’ involvement the number of children attending the school has risen sharply to over 200. Lion Sands’ Project involving Henna Pre-school was started in November 2002 with their identification of 6 orphans on the immediate area. Since then Lion Sands’ involvement with Henna has grown dramatically due to the need for basic education and healthy meals for children. This was when Lion Sands decided to reach out and help the people of Huntington. Lion Sands involvement and the Early Days of Henna Pre-School Lion Sands offer community-based tours to the Pre-school on request from the guests that stay at the Lodge. With sponsors and donations received from visitors to the school, Lion Sands co-ordinates projects for the basic up-liftment of the school and its daily activities. There was a huge task ahead when Lion Sands started their involvement at Henna Pre-School in 2002. Henna was in serious need of attention. In the early days, the class rooms were in a terrible condition, and this was identified as the fist project to be taken on. Three students from the UK came out for six weeks to assist with maintenance tasks at Henna Pre-School. They work on a voluntary basis and Lion Sands sponsored accommodation and food. Their assistance was greatly appreciated by the Huntington community. Lion Sands has also facilitated various other initiatives at the school and are currently placing the final touches to the two new class rooms. These rooms were built because the number of children attending the school has dramatically increased. The extra two rooms will also help with better education as the children will now be taught in the following age groups:
The opening ceremony for the two new classrooms was held on the 24th of June 2005.
