EXCITING NEW INITIATIVE TO DRIVE TOURISM TO DURBAN’s WESTERN AREAS Local community urged to take part. A unique initiative by the City of Durban and community stakeholders in the Inner West Region of Durban, the Durban West Community Tourism Organisation (DWCTO) is geared towards making Durban West one of KwaZulu-Natal’s major Business Tourism destinations. Business tourism is defined as the provision of facilities and services to delegates and/or visitors who attend meetings, congresses, exhibitions, business events, incentive travel and corporate hospitality functions.
The area is regarded as a microcosm of the ‘Rainbow Nation’, vested in fascinating history, diverse environmental wealth, great cultural significance, enormous industrial and commercial growth, and superlative business & leisure opportunities.
“Our aim is to create the Western Wonderer as a future tourism brand that we can market locally, nationally and overseas, “ says Barry Livsey, newly elected Chairman of Durban West Community Tourism Association, a non-profit community based tourism venture.
“We are blessed with a well organised Business Community, several world class office and industrial parks, good quality accommodation facilities and some outstanding shopping centres and community facilities. However, we’re going to have to move fast in order to kick start interest in advance of 2010, and we’re counting heavily on the Inner West Community to help us do this and buy-in to the concept will be critical.”
The project area will encompass various suburbs including Sherwood; Mayville; Cato Manor; Chesterville; Bellair; Westville; Reservoir Hills; Pinetown; Cowies Hill; New Germany; Clermont; Mariannhill; Queensburgh; Westmead and Sarnia. The Steering Committee has aligned itself to 5 principle objectives together with Durban Tourism, prior to the 2010 FIFA World cup:
1. The recognition and acceptance of the Community Tourism Organisation (C.T.O.) within the existing community structures of Durban West . 2. The opening of a Tourism Information Kiosk at the Pavilion Shopping Centre in joint partnerships with the City of Durban and The Pavilion owners. 3. The Identification and marketing of “Tourism Destinations” within the Durban West Region. 4. An improved Road Transport System for tourist travel into Durban from Durban West Suburbs, in partnership with private enterprises and The City of Durban. (an extension of the People Mover System already operational on the Beachfront). 5. Product procurement identification and guidelines to support and encourage the growth of tourism related emerging SMME businesses in the Durban West Region.
The Durban West Association will form part of the Durban stable of Community Tourism Organisations that includes such major branded attractions as Umhlanga, The Valley of 1 000 Hills, South Durban Basin and Amanzimtoti. For further information on how to become a member of the Durban West Community Tourism Organisation, or for more information on the services provided, please contact Barry Livsey (Chairman) on telephone 031 266 8640 or email lol@netsolutions.co.za
